Regional evidence presented at Global Tobacco Tax Meeting in Paris
wiiw-HEPA researchers attended the Global Tobacco Tax Meeting in Paris, exchanging insights with global experts on tobacco taxation, EU policy reform, and emerging nicotine products, including Poland’s 2025 e-cigarette excise reform.
From 20-22 January, our wiiw-HEPA researchers Biljana Jovanovikj, Kristijan Fidanovski, and Nora Kungl, alongside Senior Associate Hana Ross and wiiw Executive Director Mario Holzner, participated at the Global Tobacco Tax Meeting in Paris. Hosted at OECD, the event brought together tobacco control specialists from five continents, including representatives of the leading academic institutions and international organisations working in the health taxation field, such as the World Bank, WHO, and the IMF.
Two years into our management of a tobacco tax research and policy network spanning eight Central and East European countries, this gathering was an invaluable opportunity for wiiw-HEPA to exchange technical and actionable insights, with a particular eye on the proposed revisions to the European Union Tobacco Tax Directive, which might prove to be one of the most consequential pieces of legislation in this field in a decade. In light with the growing focus on emerging tobacco and nicotine products, our researchers also got the chance to shed light on the major excise reform on disposable e-cigarettes adopted in 2025 in Poland, one of the countries in the wiiw-HEPA portfolio.
